CanonEdit

In the Silmarillion, Turgon was the second son of Fingolfin, known as 'the Wise'. He came to Middle Earth over the Grinding Ice, where he lost his wife Elenwë, and was sent a dream by Ulmo that he was to found a city. Gondolin would be the last of the Elven kingdoms to fall to Morgoth, but he was warned against placing too much faith in its secrecy and strength. Turgon himself left Gondolin only once during the existence of the Hidden Kingdom: to join the host of Fingon in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad.

Turgon received a warning of the impending fall of Gondolin in the form of Tuor, but he chose to ignore Ulmo's message and continued to believe his city invulnerable. Gondolin was eventually betrayed by Maeglin, nephew of the King, and Turgon died defending the city.
